Who Dares and Prepares Wins

The motto "Who Dares Wins," was coined by David Stirling, a British officer known as the Phantom Major for his stealthy and successful raids on German forces during World War II. This motto, adopted by the British Special Air Service (SAS), encapsulates the spirit of boldness and audacity that sets extraordinary leaders apart. However, it is not just about the courage to take risks; it also symbolizes a commitment to planning and preparation.

Fast forward to May 1, 2011, during Operation Neptune's Spear, aimed at Osama bin Laden. Vice Admiral William H. McRaven and his team had spent 75 percent of their time over the preceding three weeks planning meticulously for the operation. On that night, the command sergeant major, Chris Faris, reminded the SEALs of the British saying: "Who Dares Wins." The mission's success underscored the notion that boldness must be paired with diligent planning and preparation.

Leaders must indeed be daring, seeking opportunities others might shy away from due to perceived high risk. Yet, boldness should not be confused with recklessness. Exceptional leaders are not only audacious but also prepare extensively to mitigate risks.

Leadership calls for a clear vision, a detailed strategy, and robust planning to turn that vision into reality. Pairing hope and aspiration with a sound strategy and diligent planning can make even the most challenging goals achievable.

Consider the Military Decision-Making Process, a seven-step methodology used by officers to develop action plans. It involves reviewing the plan, creating options, testing these options against worst-case scenarios, and ensuring the availability of the necessary personnel, training, and equipment to execute these plans. Most major companies adopt similar stress tests to prepare for potential financial crises.

A successful leader will always prepare their organization for the worst-case scenario, however unlikely it may seem, and test their plans to ensure everyone knows how to react when things go awry. So while daring to take risks sets great leaders apart, they also excel in planning and preparation. In the end, it's not just "Who Dares Wins," but also "Who Plans and Prepares Wins."
